lyrics

Do the D.A.N.C.E.
1, 2, 3, 4, fight
Stick to the B.E.A.T.
Get ready to ignite
You are such a P.Y.T.
Catching all the lights
Just easy as A.B.C.
That's how you make it right

Do the D.A.N.C.E.
1, 2, 3, 4, fight
Stick to the B.E.A.T.
Get ready to ignite
You are such a P.Y.T.
Catching all the lights
Just easy as A.B.C.
That's how you make it right

Do the D.A.N.C.E.
1, 2, 3, 4, fight
Stick to the B.E.A.T.
Get ready to ignite
You are such a P.Y.T.
Catching all the lights
Just easy as A.B.C.
That's how you make it right

Do the D.A.N.C.E.
Stick to the B.E.A.T.
Just easy as A.B.C.
Do the DANCE

Do the DANCE
The way you move is a mystery
Do the DANCE
You're always there for music and me
Do the DANCE
The way you move is a mystery
Do the DANCE
You're always there for music and me

Do the DANCE
The way you move is a mystery
Do the DANCE
You're always there for music and me

Take me through the radio
Does it all around
Except for one amp stereo
And the speed of sound

Do the DANCE (do the dance)
The way you move is a mystery
Do the DANCE (do the dance)
You're always there for music and me

Do the DANCE (do the dance)
The way you move is a mystery
Do the DANCE (do the dance)
You're always there for music and me

Under the spotlights
Neither black nor white
It doesn't matter
Do the DANCE (do the dance)

As strong as you might
Working day and night
Whatever happens
Do the DANCE (do the dance)

The way you move is a mystery
You're always there for music and me

Do the DANCE (do the dance)
The way you move is a mystery
Do the DANCE (do the dance)
You're always there for music and me

Do the DANCE (do the dance)
The way you move is a mystery
Do the DANCE (do the dance)
You're always there for music and me

Do the DANCE (do the dance)
The way you move is a mystery
Do the DANCE (do the dance)
You're always there for music and me

Do the DANCE (do the dance)
The way you move is a mystery

These are the lyrics to our chosen song, their context is fairly simple and fits the theme of a dance song.

What may be difficult about these lyrics is they don;t provide material for a story or situation as they aren't you based on the common theme of love or relationships.

chosen song

D.A.N.C.E -justice

This is our chosen choice of song which is D.A.N.C.E by justice a modern french duo who focus on electric beats and dance music. It fits perfectly for our genre as it has a young upbeat tone and appeals to the audience we will want to target. It's range of beats and lyrics will allow us to be creative with use of imagery and pace.

We have already brainstormed some ideas prior to choosing a song such as the use of bright electric neon colors and uv lighting with uv paint and these ideas helped us in choosing this song.

This song has inspired us to really take advantage of or london location and we plan to use the vibrant city life as well as the more urban areas which will all appeal to the more teenage audience.

Foster the people- pumped up kicks

Although this isn't identical to the genre we've been looking at the steady beat and easy lyrics i think would make for a really good song choice.

The positive aspects of using this song is that its very current and successful which means the variety of opinions found at the moment could help us in drawing inspirational ideas.

However this song we feel isn't upbeat enough for us and narrowly misses the genre of dance music we have been more focused on

Is tropical - The greeks

This is another option for song choice as it again is an upbeat mix sort of song. However the main aspect of this song i find interesting is the amazing video. Controversial and recently stirring major arguments in to the ethics of its content the greeks have done everything they can to get this video noticed.

The postive points of this song would be the way in which we can manipulate the fast beats and rythms.

It fits to our genre and appeals to a younger audience.

However the lyrics i feel weren't as strong and interesting in the way that they are ordered.

Its very specific to one genre which could limit the variety of locations and ideas that we could use.

Song choices

We've started looking at song choices. We had already decided our song must be upbeat and dancey but alternative at the same time. We want to stay away from chart songs to avoid stereotypical videos, by using a song nto so well known it allows us to be completely creative in creating a new video without a pre existing concept or idea.

This is Yoko by pegsus bridge, it has the upeat feel and is an alternative genre.

This is heartbreaker my metronomy....
Again this is another song that would fit in to the 'urban dance' genre, a softer tone but still the edgey originality of an indie style dance song is present. In some sense this song is similar to D.A.N.C.E by justice in the way that it has a friendly and upbeat sound but still fits in to the urban dance genre.

The wanted - Glad you came

Although this is not at all the type of music we want to go for the music video has alot of the elements we want to use. The teenage holiday/party scene with crowds of people having fun and dancing. Paticuarly the parties are a concept we want to include.

D.A.N.C.E - justice

This is another perfect example of a inspirational music video. The use of animation and bright poppy colours on just plain tshirts is a really original concept and effective for the song. The transitions of the animations are very cleverly done and again it has that young teenage out at night feel to it.

Research begins

We,ve started to brainstorm some ideas of what kind of genre we want our music video to fit. The overall decision is that we want a really uobeat song sort of dance/indie but less mainstream.

First analysis
A perfect example of a music video we want to achieve would be If the kids - life is now. This music video is aimed at a young audience, its modern and different. What I love about this video is it is fast paced which perfectly fits the song. It's rebellious and fun, although there is no storng concept it has clips of drama and peoples relationships. The switch from the citys London and New York enable great shots of city scapes and nightlife. The video has a preformance element towards the end.

Editing

The average length of a clip or shot is no more than 3 seconds and is not paticuarly continuous but I think this adds to rough jagged feel which helps the blur of events which suggests the rebellious lifestyle.  Clips are also perfectly in sync with the beat as in the transitions change where the beat changes which again adds to the movement, the idea of movement could be related to the fact the characters are young and growing therefore there is other suggestions of pace and movement such as the train, cars and running. The colours and tone of this video are vibrant at the same time are deeper and darker than you would probably expect from a more commercial music video. This artist has also used some collected footage from the student protests which again adds to the theme.

Music video research

To start this course my first step has been to research and get ideas of trends and themes common and uncommon within the media today. I have begun to look at the various different genres around today and how strong their codes and conventions are.

The main genres I found from looking at download charts and services such as Itunes are...

  • Commercial/chart
This genre is typically the most profitable genre and is amied at the widest target audience which means it is often changing with trends and has quite a variety of styles of music within it. However in terms of music video the common features would be that they are of high quality and fairly simple. Their narratives often stick to the same common theme of relationship and are made to be very attractive and typical with a large performance element which has a purpose of promoting the artist as much as possible. They ultimately aim to make the artist and song desireable. One example of this would be Justin Biebers 'Baby'

  • Alternative/indie
Alternative/Indie is a genre has become more developed over the past decade and more often feeds in to the commercial charts. Although some may argue music videos of this genre are very varied, artistic and creative which they are that idea of subverting stereotypes within their music video has in actual fact become a convention of the genre itself. With a more niche audience and stereotypically less manifactured for purpose of profit and more focused on 'real music'. The Alternative/ Indie genre produces some more noticable and timeless videos such as MGMTS 'Kids'

  • Rock
Rock seems to be on a smaller scale compared to the two main genres which are alternative/indie and commercial/chart. A lot of its content does spill over in to alternative as a lot of the alternative genre is made up of what could be considered as music from the Rock genre. Videos of the rock genre typically tend to be of a darker more aggressive nature which is stereotypically attached to Rock music however like the alternative genre there is such a thin line between rock music and alternative therefore the rock chart on itunes is made up of indie and partially commercial bands such as the script. A large amount of rock music videos are made up of performance element and the target audience tend to be of a younger demographic. This example is rope by the foo fighters.

  • Hip Hop & RnB
>
Hip Hop & RnB is another genre that is highly profitable and fairly commercial and the commercial chart is again often made up of songs from this genre. A genre that has grown sufficiently  and become more versatile means that the style of video has become ever changing however there are many stereotypes of videos in this genre being very flash, lots of 'bling' and attractive females. 50 cent candy shop is a prime example of this.

Each genre clearly has its own features that highlight its genre and differentiates them. From my research i have found that the Indie/Alternative genre tends to be more creative and experimental whereas commercial and hip hop are produced to please the masses and generate success and profit.
